Do those magnetic bed underlays really work? I am wondering if anyone has tried those magnetic underlay things for the bed? The things that you use for a matress cover? Do they really take away pain in neck, back, feet? I thought I'd ask before I went out & bought one. Do they work, or are they just a rip-off?
Advice on Magnetic Underlays? I am looking to buy a magnetic underlay but would like to know of anyones experiences with them, good, bad or otherwise?
Can i use a carpet as underlay for a carpet? Hi, we are thinking about getting a new carpet for our bedroom as the current one is over 10yrs old and as we have 3 cats and 2 dogs you can imagin ehow much air is stuck in it. Looking at the price of underlay it is passible to get a carpet cheaper than underlay. Underlay for the room would cost £80 but i can get a cheap carpet for £36. my question is can i use the cheap carpet as underlay instead of underlay? i figure as it is a bedroom and not walked on all that often it shouldn't really make much difference.
Are magnetic underlays effective for relief of pain? Have you had any direct experience of their use? Which ones are better? Here is one report I found which is inconclusive: www.magneticexperience.com.au/magnetic_underlay.php -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Magnet therapy What's the evidence? Contents Magnet therapy What are the claims? What's the evidence? What about the products? What are the alternatives? The placebo effect Electromagnetic therapy The bottom line -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The big question is, do magnets really work? The answer is complicated because the more you look, the less everyone seems to know. There are some limited studies on static magnet therapy — including some that were double-blind (a highly respected method where neither patients nor researchers know who is using the trial therapy vs a placebo) — but the results are equivocal: for every positive result there’s a negative study that shows nothing. The first study to cause a real stir was done at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, in 1997. Participants were 50 patients suffering from post-polio syndrome who had been experiencing pain for at least a month. (This is a condition that can afflict adults who had polio as children; it manifests itself as muscular and arthritic pain and muscle weakness.) The researchers asked them to rate their current rate of pain on a scale of one to 10. They then taped magnets (or placebos) for 45 minutes to the area where pain was triggered. The patients then rated their pain again on the 10-point scale. The results were clear: of the 29 patients who had a magnet attached, 22 experienced an improvement in their pain levels, compared with just four out of the 21 who had the placebos. On average, the magnet patients experienced a 54% reduction in pain, compared to 12% for the placebo group. This study has since been faulted — there was a disproportionate number of women in the trial group and the strength of the force exerted by the devices wasn’t measured exactly — but it was the first to make the medical community think there might be something to magnets. Another positive result came from the University of Virginia in 2001, where magnets were trialled as a treatment for the pain associated with fibromyalgia, a rheumatological syndrome associated with widespread pain, fatigue, fitful sleep, depression and anxiety, for which there are few effective treatments. Two different magnetic underblankets (or placebos) were trialled by two groups of patients for six months. The results seemed to show that those using a ‘functional magnetic underlay’ (which provided whole-body exposure to a uniform magnetic field) had the greatest pain reduction, and researchers noted the effects were most likely cumulative. However, the results for each group weren’t different enough to be statistically significant. Since then there have been a couple of other studies showing positive effects, including one this year — a small pilot study at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, which found that after four hours, magnets were effective (compared to placebos) at reducing the pain of osteoarthritis in the knee. On the negative front, a study at the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Centre in Prescott, Arizona, in 2000 used magnets to treat chronic low-back pain by placing magnets (or placebos) on the affected area for six hours a day, three days a week for one week. It found they had no effect. Nor did magnets make any difference in a study in 1997 as a treatment for plantar heel pain, when they were placed in moulded shoe insoles for four weeks. The group with magnetic insoles showed no greater improvement than the group with regular insoles. A third study in 2002 at the Oklahoma College of Medicine, using magnetic disks (or placebos) strapped to the wrists for 45 minutes as a treatment for the pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, found no significant difference in effect between the magnets and the placebos. But the placebo group and the magnet group both reported an overall improvement in pain levels, indicating that the placebo effect was alive and well (see The placebo effect). Overall there doesn’t appear to be a trend one way or the other, nor can the studies be easily compared. Some looked for an effect in a short space of time, while others involved weeks of use. Each used a different product and different-strength magnet. Each treated the pain associated with a different condition. The groups weren’t always gender-balanced (which is particularly important when studying pain and complementary medical treatments). As far as we can tell, none of these studies appears to have been replicated, nor is there a large enough body of scientific study to rule out the placebo effect This page last reviewed September 2004

What to use as underlay under vinyl flooring on a concrete floor? I am about to have some vinyl flooring fitted in my kitchen and would grateful for any suggestions as to what I can use for cushioning and to try and keep the floor as warm as possible under foot. I have had vinyl flooring before and it is still hard and cold when standing on the flooring. I have even tried cork tiles and this did not seem to make a huge difference. Would a laminate and wood flooring underlay be suitable or would this be a waste of time? I should add that I am in the UK.
What sort of underlay can I use for carpet after removing tile? My husband and I are remodeling our home and the bedrooms all had this hideous tile. My husband got the tile up but it was a bear of a job. The floor is now very uneven with rocky patches of thinset. Will normal carpet padding cover this and make for a nice even floor or should something else be used? Short of a jackhammer I'm not sure how we could get the vestiges of the concrete.
How do I clean a woollen underlay? My daughter seems to have come down with gastro and just threw up all over my bed and it sunk into the underlay, there aren't any instructions on how to clean it so does anyone know? It is king size and very heavy and I am not sure if I can wash it or not.
Is it OK to put carpet underlay over soil and put small holes in it to reveal the soil below and plant ? a seed in each hole? Does soil have to bask itself under the sun, moon, stars and wind and elements, to be enriched to germinate seeds. And does carpet underlay have chemicals in it that would damage the plants? Thanks Lisa, I didn't even know there was a weed suppressing membrane. I didn't become interested in gardening till I saw his methods, cos I don't like getting dirty and I don't like weeds. Ranger: this is carpet underlay, brown felty stuff, not real carpet. I was wondering if there was chemicals in it that would hurt the plants. I asked a carpet salesman this question today and he said that carpet underlay and also wool carpet is saturated with chemicals and he wouldn't recommend using them in the garden, but he said that synthetic carpet was safe.

Would it be ok to underlay with thin foam wall insulation on a ceiling? I have 12’ ceilings that are solid bare wood tongue and groove boards over studs. I will be covering them with a Finished wood flooring type covering. (seen it done on a home show but over studs) It’s the type that goes under out door siding. Getting in the attic is a problem to add insulation. I can’t see any reason why I couldn’t. Any advice?

What's the best way to lay real wood flooring? Do I need underlay? We want to put real wood flooring in the hallway. There is a chipboard floor underneath, sitting on joists. Presumably, I'll need some sort of underlay board. Doesn't this mean that the hallway floor will be about 3-5cm higher than the adjacent carpeted lounge floor? Is that really what's meant to happen?
Laying a carpet on a screed floor - Which type of underlay should we use ? Our new house has a screed floor on the ground floor. The lounge will be getting carpeted and the remaining rooms will be getting tiled. Which type of underlay should we use for under the carpet ? Should I be concerned about coldness underfoot ? If so, can you buy thermal underlay ? What about the floor tiles ? Are they likely to be cold underfoot ? Is there anything you can do under floor tiles to make them warmer (other than under tile heating) ? Thanks, Gav.
What wood flooring should I use for my table tennis room? What wood flooring should I use for my table tennis room? Some recommended floating interlocking laminate flooring with good underlays is good but I don't know what the hell are they talking about. I was wondering if some could suggest and explain some wood that can be used to play Table Tennis. To help Table Tennis requires good shock absorption and cushion from underlays. Those expert wood people out there please help.

Is using an underlay under solid hardwood floors better? What kind? We are installing a solid hardwood floor (nail down) in our home over a plywood subfloor. The room is over the garage and I would like to put down an underlay to help with sound transmission and insulation. Is this even a good idea? What kind of underlay is best? Cork? Synthetic? Thanks

Do I need to put a paper underlay under an oak hardwood floor? First of all, the hardwood flooring is being installed in the upstairs of my home so a moisture barrier isn't necessary. Secondly, the sub-floor is 3/4" tongue & groove with a layer of 3/8" plywood on top of that. I am wondering if the paper is truly necessary to stop the hardwood from squeaking or if it will be fine without it.
What do you need to lay laminate flooring? As well as the laminate boards of course! Which toold do you need? How much should it cost to get the under felting in a roof repaired? I have had a survey back from a house I am wanting to buy. Its 1935 terrace (brick). The survey says that the under-felt needs repair. It is old and has a few small patches in it. There is no sign of water leaking through -it says the tiles will need to be relaid on new underlay in due course. It has been suggested that if I buy the house that I would need to get it fixed in the next 2 -3 year. How much would i expect to pay to get that fixed in the Uk - I am based in Bristol, and would they have to do it externally (and therefore I assume need scafolding)? Thank you very much!
How do you get rid of the smell of cat urine from sub-floors? I have removed wall to wall carpeting and underlay, awaiting installation of new carpet. I noticed distinct odor of cat urine in one corner (cat has now moved out of house). Any suggestions on what I can do to remove smell before new carpet is installed?
how do i lay an engineered wood floor? I am about to lay an engineered wood floor on top of existing suspended wooded floor boards. Is the cheap 2mm underlay sufficient for the job? Also, do I need to staple/stick the underlay onto the existing floorboards? I've read that you are suppose to lay the engineered floor across the existing floor boards for strength, etc. However, the existing floor boards go lengthwise across the room. Would the new floor look silly if the boards went widthwise?
Why does the en-suite in my newbuild apartment smell of fusty chemicals? The plumber says it has nothing to do with water or drains. I have removed the carpet an underlay thinking that the smell originated from there. I have a suspicion that the smell is coming from the adhesive underneath the wooden carpet grippers on the perimeter. Is this likely? The smells seems to come and go though making it extremely difficult to identify its source. I plan to get the floor replaced with Vinyl and the wood and adhesive removed beforehand. Does anybody have any suggestions of what it might be?
