Is it OK to put carpet underlay over soil and put small holes in it to reveal the soil below and plant ? a seed in each hole? Does soil have to bask itself under the sun, moon, stars and wind and elements, to be enriched to germinate seeds. And does carpet underlay have chemicals in it that would damage the plants? Thanks Lisa, I didn't even know there was a weed suppressing membrane. I didn't become interested in gardening till I saw his methods, cos I don't like getting dirty and I don't like weeds. Ranger: this is carpet underlay, brown felty stuff, not real carpet. I was wondering if there was chemicals in it that would hurt the plants. I asked a carpet salesman this question today and he said that carpet underlay and also wool carpet is saturated with chemicals and he wouldn't recommend using them in the garden, but he said that synthetic carpet was safe.

Can I reuse carpet underlay outside, under my dogs mat? I just pulled up my old carpet and need to replace the underlay as well. Can I use the old stuff outside? It'll be under cover, but there will be moisture in the air. Will it mold? Off gas? I hate to put it in the landfill if there are other uses for it.
Can i use a carpet as underlay for a carpet? Hi, we are thinking about getting a new carpet for our bedroom as the current one is over 10yrs old and as we have 3 cats and 2 dogs you can imagin ehow much air is stuck in it. Looking at the price of underlay it is passible to get a carpet cheaper than underlay. Underlay for the room would cost £80 but i can get a cheap carpet for £36. my question is can i use the cheap carpet as underlay instead of underlay? i figure as it is a bedroom and not walked on all that often it shouldn't really make much difference.

Would it work if I spray the underlay with adhesive, stick it to the steps then leave it a day to stick properly then spray the carpet with the adhesive and stick that to the underlay?? Laying a carpet on a screed floor - Which type of underlay should we use ? Our new house has a screed floor on the ground floor. The lounge will be getting carpeted and the remaining rooms will be getting tiled. Which type of underlay should we use for under the carpet ? Should I be concerned about coldness underfoot ? If so, can you buy thermal underlay ? What about the floor tiles ? Are they likely to be cold underfoot ? Is there anything you can do under floor tiles to make them warmer (other than under tile heating) ? Thanks, Gav.

What sort of underlay can I use for carpet after removing tile? My husband and I are remodeling our home and the bedrooms all had this hideous tile. My husband got the tile up but it was a bear of a job. The floor is now very uneven with rocky patches of thinset. Will normal carpet padding cover this and make for a nice even floor or should something else be used? Short of a jackhammer I'm not sure how we could get the vestiges of the concrete.
Removing "stuck" carpet underlay? I'm replacing carpets, and the existing foam underlay has stuck to the concrete floor... so I'm looking for an easy way to remove it. I'm already familiar with the "crawl around on the floor with a scraper for several days" technique, I was hoping that somebody may be able to offer something more, well... easy Something magical, along the lines of "soak the floor in a mixture of white wine vinegar, rhubarb juiceand the leaves of certain rare herbs, which will completely unstick the whole carpet, and roll it up in the corner, ready for disposal", would be perfect.... Or somewhere between the two extremes would be welcome, too... Any ideas, anyone?
Carpet underlay and Laminate flooring? Hi, I am thinking about getting good quality laminate flooring, I have carpet at the minute. I have felt underlay which was quite expensive, can I keep the underlay on and use the cheap foam underlay over the top, then lay my floor? Thanks x
Could carpet underlay contain asbestos? I was ripping up my pop's old house carpet underlay/underfelt and i was concerned at the time if it contained asbestos. My pop and i wore no mask. I did find some information here - http://www.public.health.wa.gov.au/cproot/1365/2/Asbestos_Carpet_Underlay.pdf
CARPET & UNDERLAY ON STONE STAIRS? I have already asked this question but feel as I didnt specify one thing, I didnt get an answer that was helpful. I have indoor concrete stairs in my flat and have just bought a carpet and spray adhesive. I have just been given underlay so wanted to use that also. Is it ok to stick the underlay on the tread of the stairs with the adhesive and then the carpet onto the underlay with the adhesive?
Asbestos carpet underlay? With recent news in Australia that hessian bags used to carry asbestos were recycled as carpet underlay, does anyone know in what part of Aust that was? We pulled up our carpet in Brisbane QLD 6 mths ago and the underlay was hessian. A lot of dust went everywhere and we vacuumed with standard vac so now I am concerned that dust could be on our furniture, bed mattress and inside our vaccuum cleaner and spreading each time we use it?
Best Carpet Underlay for a 19m Square Room? Carpet shops have offered underlay at too high a price so I am cutting out the middle man and buying it myself, I have a fitter to do the job. I have already bought the carpet itself. Websites I have looked at... http://www.discounted-carpet-underlay.co.uk/tredaire_dreamwalk_underlay.html Offer - £88.34 for about 23m square, 1 roll and 1 half roll. http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/tredaire_carpet_underlay.html Tredaire Superior Carpet Underlay Offer - £87.11 for 20m square by the metre. I am looking for medium quality, good sound proofing and obviously the best deal including delivery for the UK. Anyone else have any better offers or advice? Thanks Adam
Should I use my old carpet underlay for laminate or should I buy specialty laminate floor underlay? I am thinking of buying laminated flooring for my lounge. I have carpet underlay which is in great condition Should I spend the money on new laminate floor underlay or is it possible to use my current carpet underlay? I don't want it to be like the laminated floor moves when I step on it..... obviously Thanks in advance. I am planning to do this myself I've already done it once but I thought I could save abit of money if I used the carpet underlay insted of buying the special one again.
Can I lay vinyl flooring over carpet underlay? I intend to lay vinyl on a floor that currently has carpet on it. Obviously I will take the carpet up first but was wondering if I can leave the old carpet underlay down and put the vinyl over that? If not can I lay the vinyl straight onto the floorboards or will it need some other kind of underlay? Any suggestions would be appreciated as I have to get this done on the weekend! Thanks for all the answers so far! Just to clarify this is not for a bathroom, just for a long straight room, so no awkward fittings. Also it does not need to look perfect as it is only a temporary measure whilst my new dog is a puppy! Keep them coming please!
Will my carpet be ok without underlay? Im a single mum of three and a student so you can probably guess that i don't have alot of money! I went to a carpet store and they said that i could carpet a room using felt back carpet which the fitters can use glue to put down because felt back carpets don't require underlay. right now that seems to be my only option. i just wanted to know if anyone has a carpet that doesn't have any underlay and if is worth doing it??
Where can I buy natural carpets and underlay - NO CHEMICALS? I am looking at replacing all my houselhold carpets with totally natural carpets and underlay. I have been charged for the same amount for carpet and underlay, however I cannot feel any underlay in parts? Just had the carpet fitted and it has not yet tightened up as the fitter said it would so it is quite loose and baggy looking on the face of the stair but tight on the actual step, is this correct? Also charged for 15sq m of carpet and decent underlay but can't find underlay in places..... We can feel the gripper nails all around the edges and on the stairs too, is this normal? Our son will be crawling soon and it will not be safe. I am contacting the company concerned but I want as much info as possible, thanks
change underlay, keep carpet? When we moved into our house a couple of months ago we changed the carpet in the living room but left the old underlay because the capet fitters said it's still fine. But since then terrible dark stains have come through our new cream carpet where it's most used, like doorways etc.. I would like to know if it's still not too late to change the underlay and give this carpet a good clean. I'd be very upset if there was nothing i could do to fix it, please help!
just bought new carpet,do i need underlay? in the past i've either bought canvas backed or foam backed carpets, this time however i've bought a felt backed one,i know that canvas backed NEED underlay and foam backed don't really but it does make the floor more comfy, this time i've gone for a felt backed carpet and want your opinion on whether or not to get underlay before i fit it,will my floorboards show through over time or do felt backed carpets resist this kind of wear?
I've got some water damage to my carpet? We went a way for a week, came home to find the radiator leaked rusty water onto the floor. I've lifted the carpet and underlay and am in the process of drying them out with a fan heater and fan. When they're dry, will the mouldy/mildewy smell go away? And how can I get the rust stains out? It's a beige carpet which runs throughout the downstairs, can't afford to replace it, don't want to call insurance company... premium will go up next year!
removing and installing carpet over vinyl and asbestos tile? I have an older home and have bought carpet and underlay that will be installed. I am to remove the old carpet. Can I have the carpet installed over the vinyl/asbestos tile? Do I have to be careful not to break the tile? Can the tile be removed and disposed of legally?
Is my old dining room carpet contemporary art? I've just re-floored my dining room. Do you think anyone would be dumb enough to shell out a few grand for the old carpet and underlay I ripped up? Would it increase the price if I act difficult? Or inflict a few wounds on myself and act a bit like I'm tormented? Given some of the crap Tracy Emin gets away with, I must be able to get a few quid. Would someone like to be my agent? I've got another project in the pipeline under the working title of "some empty tins of beans". I reckon I can produce 2 to 3 pieces a week. P.S. Stuckists can keep their opinions to themselves, thank you very much.
Is there such a thing as soundproof carpeting (or underlay)? I'm carpeting a baby's room with a tenant who lives underneath and want to sound proof the floor as much as possible so as not to wake them up when the baby cries. I want to soundproof it and I'm getting different answers from different people. I wanted to see what was out there in terms of soundproof flooring.
Smelly Carpet, how do I eliminate the odour? My brother is renting a flat and since being there a strong sweet odour has become noticable. There was an elderly man in there and we think he had urinal incontinence. There is most likely old fibre underlay below the carpet. I am steam cleaning the flat this weekend and am hoping for some ideas, I was thinking along the lines of using cheap white vinegar in hot water as a rinse once I have done the carpet with the steam cleaning detergent. Cheers and Thanks in advance, Shona
Have you ever hosed or washed down your car carpet? Wondering if anyone has washed the carpet in their car? Someone has suggested i remove the carpet from my car, degrease it and then wash it. Trying to find out if its going to damage the underlay too much?
How much for a decent carpet? How much could I expect to pay for a decent wool carpet for the bedroom. The room is approx 18ftx14ft. I also need underlay. I don't need carpet fitting as I have a friend who will do this for me
Can carpet be fitted on top of laminate flooring? I am getting carpet fitted but would rather not have to remove the existing laminate flooring. I thought keeping this in place could be additional insulation and it also saves the hassle of having to remove it. Is this ok? Also, not sure whether underlay is required. May be getting carpets with felt backing (tbc) and I was told this wouldn't require underlay. Under the laminate flooring is chipboard floorboards.
