What kind of rugs are best for hardwood stairs?

Have new hardwood staircase that's already getting scratched. Heard latex backing causes damage/discoloration to the wood. Any body know where I can get small stair tread rugs w/o latex or rubber backing?

1. Our hardwood staircase is carpeted down the center. The other option is a custom center carpet and then you would buy the iron rods to hold each in place.
2. Hi the best rugs are the ones with a jute backing. I would advise anything that is high density. Here is one I liked, but i dont think they have them in the roll runner size.
