How do I stop my dog from eating bedding and vomiting?

Male Lab/85lbs/8 years old. He has been eating his bedding and throwing it up. We thought this was happening because the kids went back to school after Thanksgiving and he missed them. Especially since one of the kids came home, and he seemed to be doing better. He tore apart his bedding and ate it, threw up the last remains yesterday. But today while everyone was at work, he ate some his new bedding and threw up a lot again. Why is he eating his bedding? Is there anything we can do to stop it?

  1. try spraying that stuff on his things i think its called bitter ease... i cant remember but it makes things taste terrible for them , my husbands golden used to chew up everything so we started spraying everything but her toys, it took awhile ... but it worked oh and it doesn't smell bad so he would still be able to sleep on it
  2. you don't say what you are using for bedding, but I would say get rid of it and don' t get any more.
  3. This sounds like it may be a form of separation anxiety and he is stressed when alone. If he is only chewing the bedding when you are not around, then you need to remove the bedding while you are gone. There is a good chance that some of the bedding will be swallowed and he may not be able to digest it causing blockages that will have to be surgically removed. You can return the bedding when you are at home to supervise him. If you don't already have them, I would recommend that you purchase plenty of appropriate chew toys and if you catch him chewing on his bedding direct his attention to the toys and let him know that the bedding is not allowed. If he does have separation anxiety you need to work with him to get him to understand that you will be returning and that he need not stress when left alone. I would recommend you contact a trainer in your area that might be able to help you with this part of his training. A good trainer will need to know a lot about your schedule and other info concerning your current lifestyle to effectively help you and your dog overcome this.
