How often should you replace carpets installed in your house?

Our house is 12 years old. The carpets are a bit worn, but not visibly filthy as we use a carpet cleaning machine about 6 times per year. We have two small dogs who occasionally pee & poo on the floor (I know, we need to do better at training them. DISGUSTING!!!). No kids and we remove our shoes at the front door. We always clean the pet spots with a small motorized handheld carpet cleaning machine.

  1. Most carpets are 20 to 30 year carpets it depends on what you buy. If it was there when you moved in who really knows. It could be time.
  2. You replace them when they no longer appear satisfactory to you. If you bought el cheapo carpets and have a lot of rugrats or pets they might only last 5 years. Good stuff will last over a decade. I suppose if it were just you and your spouse and you took your shoes off before entering the house they might stretch out to 20 or 30 years.
  3. It depends on the wear, if you have a large family with pets, it's probably time. If it's 2 or 3 and you remove your shoes and have a good vacuum you may have a few years left on it. How many fibers do you see in the bag after vacuuming? If there is a lot it may be getting worn, if not it's probably holding it's own.
  4. Same here! We are seriously, considering on replacing our 14yr old carpet because I just can't deal with it getting so dirty within a month of a professional coming in. I use a shampooer also at least twice a month. I also have the Spot Bot, but it's time to change it. I can only imagine what the padding looks like and the smell that will be there when we remove the rug! Ewwww. 2 Dogs, 2 kids, and always company here. :-)
